I don't even know how to classify them, but there is a band Thumb, they could be alternative. I think everyone should check them out!

Technically Lifehouse is Christian Alternative. The band is even willing to sit in that category (unlike many other bands composed of practicing christians...)
Just getting that out of the way.
Fav. Alt band... Hmm. It'd have to be Alt Rock and I'd say OLP (Our Lady Peace for the uninitiated).

ARCADE FIRE! ARCADE FIRE! ARCADE FIRE! I also second that the Delgados, Fiery Furnaces and Godspeed! You Black Emperor are all excellent bands.

Is it odd that I've never heard of any of those bands?

Nope. Only two have been around for more than three years. Godspeed! You Black Emperor is a Montreal anarchist band that has been producing nought but instrumental music since 1994. You may have heard them as the main Theme of 28 Days Later, which was called 'East Hastings'. The Delgados have likewise been around for a decade. They are a Scottish band famed for producing music that sounds really nice and epic until you realise it is cheerfully discussing a man getting punched in the guts, or dementia. Both are deliberately not mainstream. The Fiery Furnaces are a bizarre neo-prog rock band, composed of a brother and sister from the Bronx, who sing about boats carrying blueberries and the end of the world with equal gusto; the Arcade Fire is a stunningly cool 'indie' Montreal band, who were nominated for best Alternative band at the Junos. The fact that ye had not heard any of these bands should not be discouraging. They are all quite good; thus, check them out, if ye dare.
