Well, Bad Religion is a cool group, but once again, I'm not up on this whole "divisions of rock" thing. To me, Punk=metal=industrial=goth=ROCK.Well, you get the idea. what? What? Did you just say that? or... Am I hallucinating? Punk != Metal != Industrial != Goth != Rock. Does Pennywise = Metallica = KDMFM = Marilyn Manson = Aerosmith?? Then you contradiced yourself by called Ceith narrow-minded because he said punk music doesn't has variations, but you claimed it does.... I mean... they either do and you no longer believe in your previous comments or you agree with Ceith and all punk is the same...

Sorry. I get that all the time. I suppose I really should be clearer. Of course, Since I'm going back and forth editing this, it may not be very coherent either. What I meant was that not all music in a genre, say punk, is the same, because all bands have their own styles. But, I don't really like genres, because there are always those bands that don't quite fit into any genre, which just gets confusing, especially when looking through record stores arranged by genre. For instance, I've heard Alien Ant Farm described as Punk, Alternative, Hard Rock, and Rock 'n Roll. Also, what about groups that cross rock and rap styles, like Linkin Park or the Insane Clown Posse? I guess it's really just a personal thing. I get tired of having to go through several sections at stores because people can't decide what genre some bands are. Like I said, I really should've given those posts some more rewrites or something. My thoughts weren't very coherent. Sorry. I think what happened was that when Ceith made the comment that "Punk is punk, there are no variations," I decided to play the devil's advocate to draw out more of his thoughts on the matter. Kinda back-fired I guess. I really wasn't trying to annoy anyone though, and I'm sorry if I did. Er... someone shut me up now. I'm starting to feel even stupider than normal. >.<

I'm sorry, but that just confused the hell outta me
All bands do have their own style, true. But music evolves constantly. If you were to compare what was mainstream punk back in the 80's'/early 90's with the mainstream punk music of today, it would be two different sounds. The earlier punk had more variations between bands while the punk music of today seems to have the same sound and harmonies from band to band.
You have to understand as well, that there really isn't anything that is just plain "rock" any more. (I learned about this in school a few years back). Rock and roll was the music of mostly the 50's/early 60's. Then it began to evolve into different genres. (ie punk, disco, acid rock, etc).

Well, everyone's free to ignore everything I've said in this thread. In the end, while there's a lot of different styles, I guess I don't like sticking labels on everything.

I guess it still evades people that I was trying to talk about the diversity of rock music, not discount differences in style...
Oh screw it.
f**k you. Die. Go to hell.

The Distillers are punk. Bad Religion is punk. Rancid, the Dropkick Murphy's, Alexisonfire, and Motion City Soundtrack are all punk.
Naming one who's better than the others is kinda folly; the whole point of punk bands is not that they're awesome musicians, it's that they have an infectious energy that gets you in the mood to punch a cop and tackle homeless folk.
